Ring sizing is the most practically urgent question in the engagement ring process for one specific person: the buyer who is planning to propose and needs to know the size without asking. This guide is written for that person first. It also covers how to measure your own ring size at home, average ring sizes in Canada, how sizing varies by ring style, and what happens when the size turns out to be wrong.

Getting the size wrong is not a disaster. Most rings can be resized. Getting it right from the start is better. And the most reliable way to get it right is to come in and be sized in person.

Why Ring Sizing Is Harder Than It Looks

Most people assume ring sizing is straightforward. It is not always, and understanding why makes the rest of this guide more useful.

Finger size changes

Temperature, time of day, hydration, and hormonal changes all affect finger size. A finger measured first thing in the morning in winter reads differently from the same finger measured in the afternoon in summer. The difference can be half a size or more. Getting measured at different times, or at the same time of day consistently, produces a more reliable result than a single measurement.

The knuckle problem

For many people, particularly those with larger knuckles relative to their finger base, the size that passes over the knuckle is larger than the size that sits comfortably at the base. A ring sized for the knuckle spins. A ring sized for the base will not go on. A comfort fit profile or a specific sizing strategy resolves this. It is a conversation for the consultation.

Width affects fit

A wider band fits more tightly than a narrow band at the same nominal size. A 3mm band in size 6 fits differently from a 6mm band in size 6. This matters particularly for wedding bands. Someone who sizes an engagement ring and assumes the wedding band will be the same size is often surprised.

 

How to Get Her Ring Size Without Her Knowing

The most searched question in this category and the most anxious one to navigate. Here are the approaches that actually work, in order of reliability.

The borrowed ring method

Find a ring she wears on the finger you are targeting, ideally the left ring finger. Take it to a jeweller and have it measured directly. This is the most reliable approach. The ring needs to be one she wears on that finger specifically, and one that fits comfortably rather than one she forces on or wears loose.

If you cannot take the ring away, trace the interior onto a piece of paper and bring the tracing. A jeweller can estimate from a tracing. It is less precise than measuring the ring directly, but it is a solid starting point.

Ask someone who knows

Her closest friend, sister, or mother often knows her ring size or can find out without raising suspicion. This is the most reliable method after the borrowed ring approach and the one most people overlook because they are focused on secrecy. A trusted person asking casually is often more accurate than any measurement method.

The string or paper method while she is sleeping

A thin strip of paper or non-stretchy string wrapped carefully around the ring finger, marked where it overlaps, and then measured. Accuracy depends on doing it without disturbing her. Treat the result as a starting point rather than a confirmed size. It is better than nothing and worth attempting if the other approaches are not available.

When you genuinely cannot find the size

Order slightly larger. A ring that is too large can be sized down. A ring that needs to go up significantly is a more involved repair. When in doubt, size up by half a size. Size 6 is the most common starting point for women in Canada, and it is the default we use when there is no other information.

 

How to Measure Your Own Ring Size at Home

For the person measuring for themselves, there are three reliable methods.

The string or paper method

Wrap a thin strip of paper or non-stretchy string around the base of the finger. Mark where it overlaps. Measure the length in millimetres. Divide by 3.14 to get the diameter, then match to a ring size chart. Best done two or three times across different days and averaged. Do not measure first thing in the morning or immediately after exercise.

The existing ring method

Measure the internal diameter of a ring that fits the correct finger comfortably. Match the diameter to a ring size chart. More reliable than the string method because the ring has already been tested on the finger at the right time of day.

Get sized professionally

A jeweller uses a set of graduated metal rings to find the exact fit. It takes two minutes. It is the most accurate method and the one we recommend as the baseline. Come in and we will size you. Ring Size Chart Canada

Canadian and US ring sizes use the same numeric scale. UK sizes use an alphabetic scale. The conversion matters when buying from international retailers or using online resources that reference different systems.

Common conversions: US/CA size 5 = UK J½. US/CA size 6 = UK L½. US/CA size 7 = UK N½. US/CA size 8 = UK P½. US/CA size 9 = UK R½.

Average ring sizes in Canada: women typically fall between size 5 and size 7, with size 6 being the most common starting point. Men typically fall between size 9 and size 11, with size 10 being a common midpoint. These are starting points. Hand size and finger size do not always correlate the way people expect.

For the proposing buyer with no other information: size 6 for women is the standard default. It is the size that is easiest to adjust in either direction for most people.

 

Sizing Considerations by Ring Style

The design of the ring affects the sizing strategy. This is the section most sizing guides skip.

Solitaire and plain bands

Straightforward to size. Can be sized up or down within a range, typically two sizes in either direction, without affecting structural integrity.

Pavé and eternity bands

Resizing is possible but more involved. Stones set around the band need to be removed, the band altered, and the stones reset in the adjusted section. This adds cost and time. A full eternity band cannot be resized at all because stones run the full circumference. Size these carefully from the start.

Rings with complex shanks or side stones

Resizing affects design proportions. A ring with tapered side stones sized up may alter the relationship between the side stones and the centre setting. Discuss with the jeweller before making a size decision.

Wide bands

Wider bands fit more tightly at the same nominal size. A ring ordered in a known size but in a wider band than the person usually wears should be ordered half a size up.

Rings with engravings

A ring can be sized after engraving, but significant resizing may require the engraving to be redone in the altered section. Confirm the size before engraving where possible.

What Happens When the Size Is Wrong

Most first-time buyers are anxious about getting the size wrong after a proposal. The honest answer: it is common, it is fixable, and it rarely causes a problem.

Sizing up

The shank is cut, a section of matching metal is added, the ring is soldered and refinished. For plain shanks in most metals, this is a clean process that leaves no visible trace when done well.

Sizing down

The shank is cut, a section of metal is removed, the ring is rejoined and refinished. Generally slightly more straightforward than sizing up. 

The limits

Most rings can be sized two sizes in either direction without issue. Beyond that, the proportions of the shank change enough to affect the ring’s appearance and structural integrity. Rings with full pavé, channel-set stones, or full eternity settings have more limited sizing options.

A standard resize takes one to two weeks. If the proposal and a specific date are close together, factor this in.

 

Sizing for Custom Rings

For someone designing a custom ring, sizing happens at the beginning of the process rather than after. The considerations are slightly different.

For a proposal ring being designed as a surprise, the same approaches apply: borrowed ring, trusted friend, size 6 as a default. Build the expectation into the process from the start: the first resize is included, so there is no pressure to get it exactly right before the proposal.

For a ring being designed for yourself, come in and be sized before anything is made. That measurement is the starting point for everything that follows.
