Note: This diamond buying guide is written by a team with decades of direct sourcing experience who carry both natural and lab-grown diamonds and have no agenda about which direction you go.
Diamond shopping is genuinely confusing. The variables are invisible, the terminology is technical, and the gap between what a certificate says and what a stone looks like in person is larger than most guides will admit. What follows is an attempt to close that gap.
Why Diamond Buying Is Harder Than It Should Be
Three things make diamond buying uniquely disorienting.
First: not all certificates are created equal. A GIA grading report and an IGI report on nominally identical stones can represent meaningfully different diamonds. The grades are not interchangeable. However, most buyers don't know this, and most jewellers don't volunteer it.
Second: the online and in-person gap. A stone that looks exceptional on a grading report can look flat in natural light. Cut quality, the variable that most affects how a diamond actually performs, is the hardest to assess from a certificate alone. A 360° video on a website doesn't solve this either. You don't know if that's the exact stone you'll receive, and even if it is, a screen can't replicate how a diamond handles light in a room. There is no substitute for seeing a stone in person, under natural light, held by someone who knows what they're looking at.
Third: the lab versus natural pressure. The industry has strong financial incentives pushing in both directions. Natural diamond dealers defending value on one side, and lab-grown retailers building market share on the other... so neither side is fully objective. We'll cover the honest version of both later in this guide.
Diamond 4C Guide: What Actually Matters
Cut, color, clarity, carat. You've probably already encountered them. Here's what they actually mean for how a diamond looks on a hand, and how they relate to what you spend.
Cut: The Most Important Factor
Diamond cuts are not the shape of the diamond. It's the quality of the faceting and proportions that determine how a stone handles light. Specifically, the relationship between the crown angles (the upper facets) and the pavilion angles (the lower ones) determines whether light enters and returns as brilliance or leaks out the bottom as dullness. When those angles fall within a precise range, you get maximum brilliance and maximum dispersion- that separation of white light into a spectrum of color that makes a diamond look alive.

Diamond cutters make a choice: optimize for beauty, or optimize for carat weight. A cutter who prioritizes weight will leave more rough on the stone, which can mean shallower pavilion angles and a stone that looks dull despite a strong grade on paper. A cutter who prioritizes beauty sacrifices weight to achieve proportions that perform. This is why a smaller diamond cut can beautifully outshine a larger stone with suboptimal proportions.
Cut is also the largest single factor in price, which is why it's the most worth understanding. GIA grades cut on a five-point scale: Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor. Excellent cut is the standard worth holding. Anything below Very Good is a meaningful compromise.
Color: Where the Best Value Often Lives
Color is graded D to Z, where D is completely colorless and Z has a noticeable yellow tint. The practical reality: the difference between D and G is essentially invisible to the naked eye in a mounted stone. The price difference between D and G is significant.
The sweet spot for most buyers is G to I in white metals, where the trace of color is undetectable once the stone is set. In yellow gold, you can go slightly warmer- an I or J reads beautifully in yellow gold where the metal warms the stone rather than contrasting with it.

Color matters more in some shapes than others. Emerald cuts and Asscher cuts show color more than round brilliants because of their large, open tables. Worth going a grade higher in color for step cuts.
Clarity: Less Critical Than You Think
Clarity is graded under 10x magnification, then plotted on a certificate that looks like a map of inclusions. That map is effectively 500 times larger than what you see with the naked eye. Most inclusions below SI1 grade are invisible without magnification. A VS2 stone and a VVS1 stone look identical face-up in almost every real-world lighting condition.
The practical threshold is eye-clean: a stone where inclusions are not visible to the naked eye under normal conditions. For most shapes, VS2 or SI1 achieves this reliably. The key is where the inclusions sit; an SI1 with inclusions near the girdle looks better than a VS2 with an inclusion directly under the table. The plot on the certificate tells you this. Most buyers never look at it.
Clarity matters more for step cuts. The open faceting of an emerald cut or Asscher makes inclusions more visible than in brilliant cuts. For these shapes, VS2 is a safer floor.
Carat: Weight, Not Size
Carat is a unit of weight, not size. Two one-carat diamonds can look dramatically different in diameter depending on their cut proportions. A well-cut 0.90ct round brilliant may look larger face-up than a poorly cut 1.10ct stone because the cut determines how the mass distributes across the face of the stone rather than pooling in the depth.
The relationship between carat, cut, and apparent size is one of the most useful things a buyer can understand. A 0.80ct stone that is cut beautifully can look prominent on the finger and perform brilliantly. It's not a compromise, but rather, a different set of priorities.
Fluorescence: The Variable Nobody Mentions
Fluorescence doesn't appear as one of the 4Cs, but it's on every GIA certificate, and it affects appearance. Medium to strong blue fluorescence can make a slightly lower color grade look brighter in natural light, which is often a good thing. It can also create a hazy, oily appearance in some stones under direct sunlight. The effect varies by stone, and only a trained eye can assess it accurately. Worth asking about fluorescence, specifically when comparing stones with similar grades.
Should You Trust Online 360° Videos?
The short answer is no- not as a basis for purchase. There are two problems.
The first is provenance: you don't know if the stone shown in the video is the stone you'll receive. Many online retailers photograph representative samples, not individual stones. The stone that arrives will have the same certificate grades, but diamonds with identical grades can look meaningfully different in person.
The second is lighting: 360° videos are shot under specialized lighting conditions designed to maximize sparkle. They don't represent how a diamond will look in natural light, office light, candlelight, or the actual range of conditions the stone will be worn in. A well-cut diamond looks different from a poorly cut diamond in natural light. That difference disappears under a sparkle-optimized lightbox.
What certificates and videos can tell you: the measurable grades. What they can't: how the stone actually performs, how inclusions look in context, whether the cut produces genuine brilliance or just certifiable grades. That's why every stone we recommend is one we've assessed in person.
Lab Grown vs Natural Diamonds
Nine out of ten clients who come in already know which direction they're leaning. It's usually budget-driven, values-driven, or both. What matters is making the decision with accurate information rather than marketing from either side.
What's the Same

A lab-grown diamond and a natural diamond are chemically, physically, and optically identical. The atoms are the same. The crystal structure is the same. The light performance is the same. A lab diamond is a real diamond. It will test as a diamond on any standard gem tester. It's not a simulant, not a fake, not a cubic zirconia.
What's Different
Origin. A natural diamond formed over billions of years under extreme geological pressure. A lab diamond was grown in a controlled environment over weeks to months using either high pressure/high temperature or chemical vapour deposition. Whether that origin difference matters is entirely personal.
Price. Lab-grown diamonds cost significantly less than natural diamonds of equivalent grades. The trade-off is something to consider.
Secondary market value. There is currently no functioning secondary market for lab-grown diamonds. Production has scaled dramatically, and prices have continued to fall, which means a lab stone purchased today is unlikely to hold its value at resale. Natural diamonds, particularly well-cut stones of strong quality, have historically held value better over time, though this varies with market conditions and stone quality. Our clients who choose natural often do so because they value the rarity and the geological story, and because there is still meaningful demand for fine natural stones.
Sustainability considerations. Many Canadians ask about the ethics of natural diamond mining. This is a legitimate question and worth researching. Some Canadian mines operate with significant environmental planning, including restoration plans filed before a mine opens. Lab-grown diamonds also have environmental costs associated with the energy required for production. The answer is that both have footprints; neither is straightforward.
It's Okay to Change Your Mind
Many people arrive certain about one option and leave leaning the other way. Seeing stones side by side in person can shift the conversation. A lab-grown stone at twice the carat weight can be surprisingly compelling when you're holding it. A natural stone's character can resonate in a way that's hard to explain from a spec sheet. Both are valid outcomes of a good consultation.

Diamond Shapes and How Shape Affects Price
Shape is an aesthetic decision, but it also has meaningful price implications. Understanding both helps you make a more strategic choice.
Round Brilliant

The most searched and the most consistently graded shape. GIA issues a formal cut grade only for round brilliants; no other shape receives this. That makes them the most predictable shape in terms of light performance. They also carry a significant price premium per carat over fancy shapes, partly because of demand and partly because achieving good proportions requires more rough diamond to be cut away.
Oval
Currently our most requested fancy shape. An oval appears larger than a round brilliant of the same carat weight because of its elongated surface area, typically 10-15% more face-up area. Prone to the bow-tie effect, a dark shadow across the centre that varies in severity depending on cut. Assessing an oval's bow-tie requires seeing the stone in person, not evaluating a certificate.
Emerald Cut
The most unforgiving shape for clarity and color. The large, flat table and step facets make inclusions more visible and color easier to detect than in brilliant cuts. Worth going one grade higher in both color and clarity relative to a round brilliant budget. The trade-off: a well-chosen emerald cut has a depth and architectural character that no brilliant shape replicates.
Cushion
Significant variation within the category. Cushion brilliant, cushion modified brilliant, and antique cushion cuts all behave differently. The certificate says ‘cushion’ but that doesn’t tell the full story. Worth seeing the specific stone rather than relying on the shape designation alone.
Radiant
A brilliant-cut shape with trimmed corners. Combines the elongated face-up appearance of a fancy shape with the sparkle of a round brilliant. Masks inclusions well. A strong choice for someone who wants significant visual presence without the constraints of an oval's bow-tie risk.
Pear
Elongated with one pointed end. Appears larger than a round brilliant of the same weight. The pointed tip requires a protective prong to prevent chipping. Oriented with the point toward the fingertip, it gives an elongating effect on the hand.
The price point. Fancy shapes generally cost 15-30% less per carat than round brilliants of equivalent quality. For a buyer whose priority is maximizing visual size within a budget, this is worth understanding before the conversation starts.

How to Read a Diamond Certificate
The certificate tells you the measured grades. It doesn't tell you how the stone looks. Both are true simultaneously, and understanding that gap is most of what separates an informed buyer from an anxious one.
Certificate Credibility
GIA is the industry standard. Their grading is consistent and conservative. IGI has tightened its standards in recent years but has historically graded more generously than GIA: an IGI G color may correspond to a GIA H.
What to Check Beyond the 4Cs
Table and depth percentages. For round brilliants, a table of 54-58% and total depth of 59-62.5% are associated with excellent light performance. These are on every GIA certificate. Outside these ranges, cut performance typically falls off. We can guide you through these nuances.
The plot diagram. Shows the location and nature of each inclusion. An SI1 with inclusions near the girdle looks better than an SI1 with an inclusion centrally placed under the table. The grade is the same; however, the appearance isn't.
Fluorescence. Listed on every certificate. As noted earlier, assess this in person rather than treating it as an automatic positive or negative.
Polish and symmetry. Listed as Excellent, Very Good, Good, etc. For maximum light performance, both should be Very Good or Excellent.
Questions Worth Asking Your Jeweller
These questions reveal whether a jeweller knows their stones or is reading off a spec sheet.
Can I see this stone in natural light? A jeweller who hesitates should be a signal.
What are the table and depth percentages, and how do they affect this stone's performance?
What certificate does this stone have, and what grading lab issued it?
Is there any fluorescence, and what does it look like in this particular stone?
If I'm choosing between this stone and a lab-grown equivalent, what would you recommend for my brief and why?
