Sapphire is the standard answer. At Mohs 9, it's the most durable colored stone for daily wear, second only to diamond, and it comes in every color: blue, teal, green, pink, yellow, and more. Ruby, which is also a sapphire, sits at the same hardness and is equally robust. Emerald is beautiful but requires more mindful handling and is better suited to someone who'll treat the ring with care. If you want a colored stone you can forget is on your hand, sapphire is almost always where the conversation starts.

Everyday dust contains quartz particles that sit at Mohs 7. Any stone below that threshold will scratch with regular wear. Sapphire and ruby sit at Mohs 9. Alexandrite at 8.5. Emerald, aquamarine, and morganite fall between 7.5 and 8, which means they can be worn in a ring but need more care than sapphire. Anything below 7 is better suited to occasional wear than a ring that never comes off. Hardness is the first thing we discuss when a client is choosing a colored stone for daily wear.

Yes. Sapphire is one of the few colored stones we'd recommend without reservation for daily wear. At Mohs 9, it resists scratching from everyday contact and handles what a ring actually goes through: soap, water, light impact. The setting matters too. A well-made prong or bezel keeps the stone secure through daily use. We recommend bringing it in once a year for a prong check and clean, the same as any ring worn consistently. The first year of service is on us.

It depends on the stone. Sapphires and rubies can be cleaned with warm water, dish soap, and a soft-bristled toothbrush. Emeralds cannot go near an ultrasonic cleaner. The vibration disrupts the oil treatment that fills their natural fractures and can make existing fractures worse. Hot water is not recommended for any colored stone. When in doubt, bring it in. We can clean it properly and check the setting at the same time.
