Metal choice is the decision most people make last and think about least. Usually it's whatever the ring comes in, or whatever looks right in a photo. That approach works until it doesn't- until the white gold starts to warm, or the prongs need attention, or the ring goes on a finger that reacts to nickel. This guide covers what actually differs between metals so the choice is made deliberately rather than by default.

We work primarily in gold and platinum. Within gold, we cast in 10k, 14k, and 18k. Each is a different alloy with different properties, different behaviour over time, and different answers for different briefs. What metal is best for an engagement ring band? Why Metal Choice Matters More Than Most Guides Say

Metal is not just aesthetic. It determines how the stone reads visually, which setting styles work, how the ring ages over decades of daily wear, and what maintenance it needs for the life of the piece.

Metal affects the stone

The metal surrounding a diamond changes how the stone reads. A G color diamond in yellow gold looks warm and rich. The same stone in platinum or white gold sits in a cooler context that makes the slight warmth in the stone more visible. Color grade and metal choice are decisions that interact. Understanding that relationship early changes what you actually look for in a stone.


Metal affects the setting

Platinum's density makes it particularly suited to prong settings for high-value stones; the prongs hold their shape better under daily wear. Harder gold alloys hold pavé settings differently than softer ones. We can consult with you on these production considerations while building your jewelry.


Metal affects the decades

A metal chosen for how it looks new will look different in ten years. Yellow gold develops a warm patina and polishes beautifully. Platinum develops a softer, more matte character. White gold returns to an off-white tone as the rhodium plating wears. None of these is a flaw; they're just different relationships with the same piece over time.



Gold: What the Karat Number Means

Pure gold is 24 karats. It's beautiful but too soft for a ring worn daily; it bends, scratches, and loses its shape. Everything sold as wearable gold jewelry is an alloy: gold mixed with other metals to increase hardness and workability. The karat number tells you the proportion of pure gold in the mix.

We work in 10k, 14k, and 18k. Here's how they differ in practice.

18k Gold: 75% pure gold

The standard for fine jewelry. Rich color, excellent workability at the bench, durable enough for daily wear. The benchmark most fine jewelers work with and the one we reach for most often.

 

14k Gold: 58.5% pure gold

More durable than 18k because the higher alloy content increases hardness. Slightly paler in yellow gold, slightly less warm in rose gold. A strong choice for someone who uses their hands heavily or wants maximum resilience. Not a lesser choice, but a different one, better suited to certain lifestyles and certain designs.

 

10k Gold: 41.7% pure gold

The minimum legal standard for gold in Canada. More durable still, but noticeably paler and more likely to cause reactions in people with metal sensitivities because of the higher alloy content. We use it selectively based on the brief.

 

One thing worth knowing about all gold

The gold in every piece we make is recycled. We buy back refined gold from the refinery- reclaimed and processed into the alloy we cast with. There's no new mining involved on the metal side. That's just how the supply chain works for our studio.

Pure gold will not hold a polish the way an alloy does. This is why 24k gold isn't used in rings meant for daily wear; it’s not a flaw in the material, but rather just the reality of what it takes to make something structurally sound.


 

Yellow, White, and Rose Gold

Same base metal, different alloy compositions, genuinely different characters.

Yellow Gold

The original fine jewelry metal. After years of white metal dominance, it's genuinely back, driven by a preference for warmer aesthetics and the way yellow gold pairs with lower color-grade diamonds and colored stones. It shows scratches more visibly than white metals initially, but polishes beautifully and requires no replating. What you see is what you have.

On skin: yellow gold reads differently across skin tones, so it’s worth seeing in person before deciding.

 

White Gold: Is It Real Gold?

Yes. White gold is yellow gold alloyed with white metals, typically palladium or nickel, which shifts the color away from yellow. Without rhodium plating, white gold has a slightly off-white or very faintly grey tone. The bright white appearance comes from the rhodium plating applied on top.

We can also work with 19k white gold for clients who ask. It's worth knowing that 19k white tends toward porosity in casting, which can affect surface quality. We'll flag this if it comes up for a specific design.

 

Rhodium Plating: What to Expect

Rhodium is a platinum-group metal applied in a thin layer to achieve the bright white finish on white gold. Over time, that layer wears away, typically most visibly on the back of the shank, where the ring contacts surfaces most. The ring returns to its natural off-white tone in those areas first.

This is not a defect, but rather, the nature of the material. We see rhodium replating as a maintenance item, not a repair. Most clients bring pieces in for replating roughly every two years, though this varies significantly with how actively the ring is worn. If your ring is starting to warm in color at the back and you're not sure whether it's time, bring it in.

If you have a nickel sensitivity: the freshly plated rhodium layer acts as a barrier between your skin and the white gold alloy beneath. As the plating wears, the underlying alloy makes contact with skin, which is when reactions sometimes appear in nickel-sensitive people who've worn white gold comfortably for years. Knowing this in advance prevents confusion later.

 

Rose Gold

A higher copper content gives rose gold its warm pink character, and makes it slightly harder and more durable than 18k yellow. The color isn't uniform across manufacturers. A higher copper ratio produces a deeper, more saturated pink. A lower ratio produces a softer blush. Worth seeing the specific alloy before committing to a color.

Copper alloys develop a patina over time. Rose gold can deepen very slightly in tone with age. Many people love this. Worth knowing it happens.

 

 

Platinum

Platinum is a fundamentally different material from gold- different density, different behaviour over time, different role at the bench. It's not a premium version of white gold. It's a different metal with different strengths.

At the material level

Platinum used in jewelry is typically 95% pure. That purity is part of what makes it hypoallergenic and part of what makes it expensive. It's also denser than gold; a platinum ring of the same volume weighs roughly 60% more. That weight is palpable on the hand. Some people love it. Some find it uncomfortable. It’s worth trying on before committing.

 

How it ages

Platinum develops a patina as it accumulates micro-scratches with daily wear. Unlike gold, which loses material when scratched, platinum displaces metal; the total mass stays consistent over decades. The surface develops a softer, slightly matte quality that many people find beautiful. If you want the mirror finish maintained, it can be repolished. Both are valid choices.

 

The setting advantage

For high-value stones in prong settings, platinum is the professional recommendation at the bench. Its density means prongs hold their shape better under daily wear. A platinum prong that has thinned with wear still holds a stone more securely than an equivalent gold prong at the same measurement. For a significant stone worn daily for decades, this matters.

 

The price reality

Platinum costs more than gold at the material level and more to work with at the bench; it requires higher temperatures and more time to cast and finish. That's why a platinum ring costs more than an equivalent piece in 18k gold. It buys the benefit of no replating, no color shift, superior prong durability.

Gold and platinum are good metals, for different jobs. Neither is universally better. The right choice depends on the design, the stone, the lifestyle, and what kind of relationship with the piece you want over time.

Skin Sensitivity and Metal Allergies

Metal sensitivities are more common than most buyers realise, and knowing about them before the ring is made is significantly better than discovering them after.

Nickel

The most common metal allergen. Nickel-based white gold alloys, the majority of white gold sold at volume, contain nickel as the primary whitening agent. Reactions range from mild irritation to significant dermatitis. Worth asking specifically whether a white gold alloy is nickel-based or palladium-based before purchasing. We can advise on this for any piece we make.

 

Zinc and copper

Present in various gold alloys at different proportions. Less commonly allergenic than nickel but relevant for people with known sensitivities. Rose gold has the highest copper content of the gold colors. Worth disclosing any sensitivity before the alloy is chosen.

 

Hypoallergenic options

Platinum (95%+ pure, no nickel) is the most reliably hypoallergenic option. Palladium-based white gold alloys are also hypoallergenic but less common and can appear slightly greyer than nickel-based alloys. They also typically require rhodium plating to achieve a bright white finish. Gold inlays are another option for clients with sensitivities: a base metal lined with a gold alloy that sits against the skin. We could discuss this at the consultation if this is a concern.


 

Alternative Metals for Men’s Bands

Some ask us what is the strongest metal for engagement ring. Titanium, tungsten, palladium, and aluminium come up now and then for men's bands. We don't typically work in these metals, but the questions are common enough that it's worth covering what they involve.

Titanium

Lightweight, durable, corrosion-resistant. The practical limitations: cannot be resized, cannot be easily engraved, and is difficult to cut off in a medical emergency. For a ring meant to be worn indefinitely and modified over time, these matter.

 

Tungsten

Very hard; harder than gold or platinum, which means it resists scratching. It's also brittle rather than malleable, meaning it can shatter under significant impact rather than bending. Cannot be resized. Cannot be cut off with a standard ring cutter in an emergency. The brittleness and the medical emergency point are both real and worth knowing before choosing it.

 

Palladium

A platinum-group metal, naturally white, hypoallergenic, lighter than platinum. Historically used as a platinum substitute when platinum prices were significantly higher. Less commonly used now but worth knowing it exists. Similar properties to platinum with fewer of the sizing and modification limitations of titanium or tungsten.

The short version: for fine jewelry designed to be worn, maintained, and potentially modified over decades, gold and platinum are the materials that work with the whole life of the piece. Alternative metals trade long-term flexibility for short-term properties.

Mixing Metals

A yellow gold engagement ring with a white gold or platinum band is increasingly common. The contrast is intentional and it photographs well. The practical note: different metals wear at different rates. A mixed set worn together daily will show that difference over time.

In a stack, mixing metals reads as considered rather than accidental when done deliberately. Three bands in slightly different metals and finishes have a character that a matched set doesn't.

Yellow gold can also be rhodium plated to appear white, which is sometimes done to match an existing white setting. However, as mentioned earlier, it’s worth knowing the maintenance implications; it will need replating on the same schedule as white gold.
