Ring Engraving Guide

Engraving is one of the smallest decisions in the jewellery process and one of the most permanent. A date, a word, a set of initials, once it is there, it is there. That permanence is part of what makes it meaningful and part of what makes people stare at a blank text field for longer than they expected.

This guide covers what wedding ring engraving and engagement ring engraving actually involve: what rings can be engraved, what the methods are, what people choose to put inside, what fonts are available including handwriting, how much it costs in Canada, and how to decide what to engrave when nothing obvious comes to mind.

Not All Rings Can Be Engraved

Before choosing what to engrave, it is worth knowing whether engraving is possible on the specific ring.

The interior surface of the shank needs enough width to hold clean lettering. Bands under approximately 1.5mm in width do not have sufficient interior surface for most fonts. The lettering becomes too small to read clearly and the engraving tool has very little room to work with. If a ring is very slender, engraving may not be possible at all, or may be limited to a single small symbol or initial.

Band width also determines how much text fits. A size 6 band in a standard width accommodates roughly 20 to 25 characters comfortably. Going over that limit means either smaller lettering, which affects readability, or wrapping text around the inside of the band, which changes how the engraving reads. Know the character limit before choosing a phrase.

Very hard metals like tungsten and certain ceramics cannot be engraved at all. Gold and platinum both engrave well. We offer engraving on our finished pieces.

Machine Engraving vs Hand Engraving

There are two methods, which produce different results.

Machine engraving

Computer-controlled and precise. Clean, consistent lettering that is identical from the first character to the last. This is the standard method for most studios and is available for a wide range of fonts. For dates, initials, and short phrases, machine engraving produces a clean, legible result. Most engraving in Canada is done by machine.

Laser machine engraving is the most common type. It is fast, accurate, and works well for both simple text and more complex designs. Lead time is typically shorter than hand engraving.

Hand engraving

Done by a skilled engraver using traditional tools. The result has a slightly organic, imperfect quality that machine engraving does not replicate. Each character has a small variation that gives the engraving a handmade character. More expensive than machine engraving, longer lead time, and not available at every studio.

Hand engraving is also the method used for actual handwriting. If a client wants the engraving to be in their own handwriting or their partner’s, they write the phrase and it is replicated as closely as possible by the engraver. It will take more time, approximately two additional weeks, and cost more than machine engraving. The result is the most personal option in the category.

What People Actually Engrave

Organised by category rather than as a list, because the category gives context that helps someone find what resonates.

Dates

The most common choice. Wedding date, engagement date, first date, a birthday. A date is unambiguous, permanent, and impossible to misinterpret. The format matters: 05.04.26 reads differently from May 4, 2026. The numeric version is more compact and often cleaner inside a narrow band. The written version takes more space but has a different weight to it.

Names and initials

A full name, a first name only, combined initials, a monogram. Works at any band width. The classic choice and still one of the most common for a reason.

A phrase or line

A short sentence, a fragment of something meaningful, a private reference. The most personal option and the one that requires the most thought. The character limit is real: most bands accommodate 20 to 25 characters comfortably. A phrase that matters more in full than in abbreviated form may not fit cleanly. Know the character count before settling on the words.

Coordinates

Where they met, where the proposal happened, where they live. Works visually as a clean series of numbers. Private to everyone except the people who know what the coordinates mean.

A single word

Always. Home. Yours. Mine. The risk with a single word is that the most obvious choices feel generic. A word that is specific to the couple, a word from a private language between them, a word that has a particular meaning in their relationship, is more lasting than a sentiment that could belong to anyone.

A symbol or small illustration

A small diamond shape, a star, a simple outline. Less common and requires hand engraving on a band with enough interior width to accommodate it. Possible for the right ring with the right engraver.

Something private

An inside reference, a nickname, a phrase in another language, something that means nothing to a stranger and everything to the wearer. The strongest engravings are usually the ones that would require explanation to anyone outside the relationship. That is the point.

Fonts

The font changes the entire character of an engraving. The same words in a serif font and in a script read as completely different choices.

Block or sans-serif

Clean, modern, legible. Works particularly well for dates and initials. Reads as contemporary. The safest choice for readability in very small lettering.

Serif

Slightly more classical. Works well for longer phrases where readability over more characters matters. Sits between the formality of block lettering and the fluidity of script.

Script

The most romantic-looking option. Also the hardest to read at small sizes. In a fine band, script lettering at under 2mm height can be difficult to distinguish character by character. If the band is narrow, script may not be the right choice regardless of how it looks at a larger scale.

Custom handwriting

The client writes the phrase. The engraver replicates it as closely as possible. The most personal font option available and the only one that is genuinely unique to the couple. Takes approximately two additional weeks and costs more than a standard machine engraving. For someone who wants the most considered option, it is the one to ask about.

How to Decide What to Engrave

Is there something you say to each other that no one else would understand? Start there. Private language between two people is the most honest source of engraving ideas and produces results that age better than borrowed sentiment.

Is there a place, a date, or a moment that anchors the relationship in a specific way? Coordinates or dates work because they are precise. There is no interpretation required. The meaning is fixed.

Does it need to make sense to anyone else? The best engravings usually do not. A phrase that reads as random to a stranger but means everything to the wearer is more lasting than a beautiful sentiment that could have come from anyone.

How will it read in twenty years? Language that feels right in the moment sometimes ages differently than something spare and specific. A date will always be a date. Certain sentiments feel different at forty than they did at thirty.

What would you want to find if you read it for the first time, years from now? That question tends to cut through the noise faster than any list of suggestions.
